dear diary, a few months ago i read a book called "dear diary, i'm dead.don't get me wrong, it was okay but it had : * a terrible plot. * a horrible ending. *and,it never even tells you what makes the diary "tick". it's about alex,who gets a new desk for his room.when he opens the desk, he finds a diary.the diary tells him of what will happen the next day.he's a bit skeptical at first, but alex is a betting kinda guy.so, he uses the diary to win bets & money.he also uses it, to one-up tessa, his betting rival.but it soon starts controlling him by making him do crazy things. it is o.k.,i'm not trying to talk you out of it.but if i were you, i wou l'd read "the howler", which is also by stine. i give it three stars. well diary, that's all for now.i have to go. sincerely, pingpong>

Good book in the series, but not the very best.

Alex likes to bet. It's his habit, and it often gets the better of him. He wants to be a millionaire when he grows up, and he can't wait to be one. But in school he likes to compete, too. He can't take the fact that a girl in his class can be so much better then him. So when his teacher asks him to write a diary, he's going to prove that he really can be the best in the class. But when he finds a strange, old diary in his basement, everything changes. This diary can predict the future -- and soon, Alex is winning every bet in the school. His peers think he can predict the future. And he really can -- and it's all because of his mysterious secret diary. Alex wants to get more and more money, but sometimes it's better not to know the future. Because the future can contain very unwanted surprises. I liked The Nightmare Room #5: Dear Diary, I'm Dead by R.L. Stine, but it wasn't the best because of the ending. That was just too expecting of R.L. Stine, reflecting his poor Goosebumps writing. But it was still very enjoyable, and a lot of fun to read.

The Diary is never wrong.

This book is about a kid named Alex Smith who finds a diary in an old desk. Later Alex finds that all of the entries were for the next day. They are also in his handwriting but he didn't do it. Soon Alex realizes that the diary is never wrong. And it doesn't always predict good things.

I think the theme is do not trust what everyone tells you. If Alex would not have trusted the diary, the bad things would not have happened. I like hat Alex likes to bet, but I don't think he should take it so far. My only question is why it started all over again at the end. I think that horror fans would like this book because of the semi-scary events.

Another "must read" from Steve McConnell

I've been a great fan of Mr. McConnell's work since I first read Rapid Development and the original version of Code Complete, Second Edition back in the mid 1990's - both of which are books I highly recommend for anyone leading software development projects or teams.

The subject matter here is much more focused than in most of his other work - dealing with a specific aspect of project management, rather than management of projects and the software development process as a whole; but, as with his other works, Mr. McConnell's Software Estimation is clearly written, well researched, and takes a very practical "hands-on" approach to the topic at hand. You will find it readable and packed with useful information. His conclusions and recommendations are well supported with references to the source material from which he derives them, and he does a good job of giving us a well balanced view of the relative merits, cautions and how best to utilize each of his recommendations.

The book is a fairly easy and straightforward read: my first pass through it took just a few hours, and I experienced one or more of those "aha!" moments of revelation with almost every chapter.

In Part I of the book, he presents overview of what Software Estimation is - and isn't; its value; what factors influence estimates; and also challenges the preconceptions all of us have with regards to software estimation. He often delves into some statistical examples to illustrate or prove his point, but these are easy to follow, and should not strain your brain too severely!

In Part II, Mr. McConnell describes a reasonably large number of software estimation techniques - describing how they work; the value, merits and challenges of each; and how to chose when (and why) to employ each one.

Part III was of the most value to me - focusing on "Specific Estimation Challenges" in the areas of estimating project size, effort, schedule, activity breakdowns, cost estimates, and metrics related to defects.

The final two chapters - 22 and 23 - of this book will be of immense value to you; as they focus on how to present estimates to others in ways that will be of most value in your attempt to provide a clear and balanced view of your project's costs and benefits to the organization. They also provide valuable tips on how to prepare and present yourself when facing the challenges that most of us (who spend more time with computers than people) encounter when trying to communicate with executives and nontechnical individuals.

In my opinion, this book will serve not only as an excellent introduction and guide to the discipline of Software Estimation, but is also an excellent reference work that you should keep close at hand: you will be digging into it regularly whenever you are managing a software development project!

In summary, this volume is yet another winner from Steve McConnell, and I recommend it highly for anyone in a leadership or senior role in software development. Five Stars!

Good information, so far

I am about half way through the book: the information is very useful and highly readable. I recommend this to anyone who has to estimate software/technology efforts, which I do as part of my living. This book will help one-time estimators, but it is not a cookbook of instant estimates. You must do the work.

The book is a reference and a textbook. The author identifies sections to skip to rather than reading straight through if you have an issue to address. As other reviews address content at length, I will not go into it.

The book discusses (thus far) refining estimates as a project continues and more detail is known, and it assumes this will happen. This is true for a PM managing his effort to stay within budget, but upfront estimates for fixed price contracts permit no such refining for the estimator. There is, however, information to help those of us who must estimate at the budget/proposal/concept stages and need to get it right.

The Kindle version has some issues if you have a black and white Kindle. For one thing, the hardcopy relies on color charts and refers to the blue areas to make a point. But in B&W, there is no differentiation in the shades. This could have been easily fixed using texture or bolding the data element titles. In addition, the chart bottoms don't show unless you significantly reduce text size, affecting readability, and there is still some difficulty seeing the whole chart in some cases. I have experienced this in other Kindle books with charts. That is not enough to dissuade from purchase, as the balance of information is well worth the price. The content deserves 5 stars, but got 4 to address the Kindle issues.

This is by a long shot the best book on Software Estimation I have ever seen. I have been in this industry for 25 years and was totally blown away by the quality of this book. I have seen many attempts to tackle this problem but never have I seen such a complete collection covering everything I have learnt in my career and more. Perhaps the best part of it is that this book will be as useful to the experienced campaigner as it will be to the complete novice. When you buy this book get more than one copy, you are going to be handing them out !

Dr. Claire Hayes is a practicing consultant clinical psychologist, lecturer, author and researcher and is Clinical Director with Aware, Ireland's national charity for people who have depression or bipolar disorder. Over the past twenty-five years, Claire's main area of interest has been to help people to understand the nature of their anxiety and to learn practical and evidence based ways of coping. DZIEGIELEWSKI is Professor and Associate Director for Research in the School of Social Work at the University of Central Florida, where she also serves as Chair of the University Institutional Review Board. She is also the Editor of the Journal of Social Service Research. She is the recipient of numerous awards, and supports her research and practice activity with over 120 publications, including seven textbooks, seventy-nine articles, numerous book chapters, and over 400 workshops and community presentations. Her research focuses on the areas of health and mental health. As a licensed social worker, she also remains active in clinical practice.

Just what I needed!

This book is just what I need! It's what I have been searching for a long, long time. The DSM is finally making some sense to me. This text addresses diversity of human nature in all its forms in such an essential matter of fact manner. This will go a long way to break through alot of prejudices which novices in clinical work like me have had; because of ignorance...and unavailable sensitive literature. Thank you Dr Dziegieleweski!!!!!!

About the Author

Samuel E. Wood received his doctorate from the University of Florida. He taught at West Virginia University and the University of Missouri–St. Louis and was a member of the doctoral faculty at both universities. From 1984 to 1996, he served as president of the Higher Education Center, a consortium of 14 colleges and universities in the St. Louis area. He was a cofounder of the Higher Education Cable TV channel (HEC-TV) in St. Louis and served as its president and CEO from its founding in 1987 until 1996. Dr. Wood passed away in 2008.

Ellen Green Wood received her doctorate in educational psychology from St. Louis University and was an adjunct professor of psychology at St. Louis Community College at Meramec. She has also taught in the clinical experiences program in education at Washington University and at the University of Missouri—St. Louis. In addition to her teaching, Dr. Wood has developed and taught seminars on critical thinking. She received the Telecourse Pioneer Award from 1982 through 1988 for her contributions to the field of distance learning.

Denise Boyd received her Ed.D. in educational psychology from the University of Houston and has been a psychology instructor in the Houston Community College system since 1988. From 1995 until 1998, she chaired the psychology, sociology, and anthropology department at Houston Community College–Central. She has coauthored three other Allyn and Bacon texts: with Helen Bee, Lifespan Development (Fourth Edition) and The Developing Child (Eleventh Edition); and with Genevieve Stevens, Current Readings in Lifespan Development. A licensed psychologist, she has presented a number of papers at professional meetings, reporting research in child, adolescent, and adult development. She has also presented workshops for teachers whose students range from preschool to college.

Together, Sam, Ellen and Denise have more than 45 years of experience teaching introductory psychology to thousands of students of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Mastering the World of Psychology, Fourth Edition is the direct result of their teaching experience.

Just so that it is clear, this particual item does not come with the MyPsychLab Student Activation Code. After talking with Amazon and describing to them that it is mentioned in the write up (which is a simular write up as the Developmental Mathematics (7th Edition), but it came with the MyMathLab). Amazon informed me that I had to search for the Mastering the World of Psychology, Books a la Carte Plus MyPsychLab Pegasus (3rd Edition) or Mastering the World of Psychology Value Package (includes MyPsychLab with E-Book Student Access )

I have noticed in other reviews that people where unhappy due to poor used book condition, this is not the point of fact; this was a new purchase, and itshould explain clearly if does or does not come with the MyPsychLab Student Activation Code.

I also want to point out that this review has nothing to do with the content in the book it self, but how some things are described in the Amazon listing. College books are expensive enough with out having to deal with the right product or not. This has been my first (and better be my last) let down from Amazon direct itself. If it was from a store selling in Amazon that is one thing, it is another when it came from the bigs itself.

I thought it was great book. This is only my third or fourth book on the HA, so it is a relatively new topic for me. I really enjoyed the structure of the book and its history. I think this book is great for new readers who dont know too much about the HA.

Interesting but very dramatic

I am not sure how much of this book is factual. It seems the author is reaching for the "shock" factor more so than the Outlaw Bikers. I found the most interesting part to be the description of the individual Angels. I had heard a lot these names, and now I know why. If you can find this book for a decent price, its not a bad read. Just be prepared for the Canadian version of the Angels, because its focused heavily on them.

A good "story"?

I have read this book and I am drawn to wonder how much is just assumption? If you get through the first few chapters without falling asleep, it picks up. Most of what Yves has to say on the history end of the club, is stuff you see on TV all the time. Nothing new.
As far as the "story", well, you can tell that he had to make up most of it. It is full of assumptions and hearsay. There would be NO way that he could know certain things that were writen. Let's face it, the people are dead and could not talk to the author.
He writes about things that agencies tell him are facts, when in the real world, they are what we call FUNDING facts. Stories made up to accuire public support and funds from different levels of government. And maybe to keep Mr. Lavigne in a job. Nice try, but I don't think so.
This book was written to strike fear into people and manipulate a system that is very one sided. It's also for people who know nothing about true bikers or thier lifestyle.
Sell your "STORY" somewhere else Mr. Lavigne.
