Great book but too short

The book is small and short. These are two major drawbacks, therefore 4 stars.

Everything else is great - highlights of crossbow and spanning devices collection from Met are lovingly selected and described, text is highly accurate, narative clear and passionate and refferences extensive.

There are several chapters - on early crossbows, renaissance and later crossbows, spanning mechainisms, bols etc.
Each chapter starts with short discussion summarisng sources, old and current theories, and is illustrated by small and elegant cathalogue of relevant Met artefacts.
While most items pictured are from museum collection, there are photos of several items from other museums and many contemporary illustations from collection all over the world, some of them quite rare.

It will be a wonderfull addition to library of historical crossbow enthusiast and a great starting point for newby

Good overview. Would have preferred detailed dimensions especially of the bows to allow for reproductions. A bit too much emphasis on the highly decorated bows but then again since more of them survived.......Useful information on bolts and loaders ( whippes, cranequins ). All in all a very useful book highlighting some crossbows that have shown up in other sources.

Very good book at an excellent price.

This book does an excellent job of illustrating and describing the various european crossbows and their related equipments in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Obviously most of the pieces included are richly decorated, very well photographed, and have complete descriptions of their histories and sources.

Owen Barfield (1898 1997), the British philosopher and critic, has been called the First and Last Inkling, because of his influence and enduring role in the group known as the Oxford Inklings. The Inklings included C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Charles Williams. It was Barfield who first advanced the ideas about language, myth, and belief that became identified with the thinking and art of the Inklings. He is the author of numerous books, including "Poetic Diction: A Study in Meaning; Romanticism Comes of Age; Unancestoral Voice; History in English Words;" and "Worlds Apart: A Dialogue of the 1960s." His history of the evolution of human consciousness, "Saving the Appearances: A Study in Idolatry, " achieved a place in the list of the 100 Best Spiritual Books of the Century.

Rather Short

This short collection of only three essay, speeches rather, from the venerable Owen Barfield is a mediocre example of the works he produced. The introduction states that many of the ideas he produced here are expansions to his previous essays and books, and having read them I concur.

This book is worth picking up to freshen up ideas of consciousness and language relations, certainly not for setting a foundation for which I would suggest Poetic Diction, hands down.

The real gem in this collection, though, is the final chapter about creating new habits and society given understanding played out in the two previous chapters. An encouraging word for those who wish to proceed with an enlightened life.

Small is Beautiful

I've used this book for several years in history courses to introduce Barfield's ideas. As a later, condensed version of his thinking, it pays off big. Yes, if you're taken with these ideas, you should read Poetic Diction and my favorite, Saving the Appearances. But History, Guilt & Habit summarizes important ideas in clear and direct language, without the strangeness of "alpha thinking" and other Barfieldian terms that pepper some of his other works. Because the chapters in this book were transcribed from lectures, it has a direct and conversational tone that makes it accessible in a way that longer works may not be. As an introduction to Barfield's thinking, this is as good as it gets.

A book of Christian anthropology from a British philosopher of the early 20th century. Barfield was an original thinker and intelligent person, but his theories skew abstract and sometimes appear to prefigure New Age trends. Not my cup of tea, but some might enjoy it, particularly fans of this author.

Deep down I think we all wish for a bit of Camelot, but as is written in the legend, corruption is always creeping around the corner. Of course Arthur dies in every version of the story. How can he not? Camelot can't last forever. There are too many forces trying to destroy the dream. That's why I brought Avalon to life. She's the force that keeps Arthur's vision alive. She's the resounding part of Arthur that will never die.
As a side note, I would like to point out that most of the women in the book have very few choices, all except for those who push their will beyond the norm. I wanted to remind people that women's rights are very new. It's been less than a hundred years since women were given the right to vote. As much as I love him, I can't imagine being told that my husband's point of view should suffice as my own at the polls. By modern standards, it's laughable. And yet, that was the attitude for most of the world's history.

An 'Okay' book

One has to expect that a retelling of the Arthurian legends is going to introduce some new elements. I was prepared to accept names being reassigned to totally different characters (for example, Aggravaine is now Arthur's uncle, not his nephew). Re-writing heroic characters as villains, ditto. What kept on jarringly breaking my sense of belief in this retelling, however, were the anachronisms. Everyone keeps saying 'okay'. Descriptions that could have easily been given a more historical tone repeatedly used modern slang. Arthur observes that something is like the explosion of a powder keg- despite explosives not having been invented during the Arthurian era. Sure, re-write a legend...but make it true to the era in which it's set.

This is not the same old Camelot story-it is much more interesting and entertaining. I bought 2 copies and gave them to friends, they loved it too.

A captivating story!

Annette Mackey is an extremely talented author! We've all heard the story of King Arthur, but in this book Annette manages to grasp all the "what if's" and unknowns of the legend and create a story of her own. The book is very easy to get sucked into. It has a great balance of dialogue, description, and action! The characters come to life, and you feel like you understand Arthur, Guinevere, Merlin, and Avalon much better. I really enjoyed this retelling of the legend of Arthur and I highly recommend it!!

Dissecting the Doctors

"Scalpel...clamp...uh oh, we need some suction...suction, come on ... clear!" No this isn't ER, nor Chicago Hope, it's Arthur Hailey's riveting hospital suspense drama, "Final Diagnosis". This eye-gluing, can't-put-down novel is a novel like no other. If you like hospital shows like ER and Chicago Hope, then you're gonna like this novel as well, maybe even better. Hailey takes his audience behind the curtains in the hospitals that we norms leave all our hopes and health in, and brings us the true environment that surrounds our residential medicine men/women, from love, pride, money, ethics, and most importantly of all politics. This book mainly surrounds an aging pathologist, Dr. Joe Pearson,who's years of service at the Three Rivers Hospital are coming to an end. Colleagues nd adversaries feel that he may be a hazard to his patient's health. The main struggle lies within Joe to realize that he is through. Love seems to always find it's way into everything. In this novel love hits two surgeons who are "just friends" and a young nurse and a young pathologist. Overall this book is one everyone can enjoy, whether you read for the love the hospital drama or for the main issue your sure to enjoy.

Interesting, gripping, definitely worth reading

In this book, Aurthur Hailey takes his readers behind the scenes in a hospital. He designs his characters carefully so that we will get to know them well and then learn to care about what happens to them next. The story itself is thrilling and flows well. In addition, the many things you'll learn about a hospital are fascinating and extremely interesting. This book won't take you long to read, and as soon as you start reading, you'll find you won't want to stop until you finish. As for all the other things in your life - they'll have to wait.

I read this and all the other Arthur Hailey novels many years ago. I was delighted by all of them and by The Final Diagnosis in particular. I remember a story with great characters and a story that unfolded so well that it kept me up into the wee smal hours...
I truly hope that it will be offered again soon, so that the many I'm sure that are waiting for it can injoy it again and also, so that it can be discovered by the many who have not....

Disappointing

The myths (fascinating) are clearly presented, with bold-face type stressing important points, but the reading is interrupted by commentaries in the margins. The introductory remarks are often written in such convoluted style that they are more confusing than illuminating. Tiny, unclear photos of related artworks are next to worthless.

A Textbook that doesn't feel like one.

This text is interesting in that it reads more like an anthology than a textbook. It is mostly composed of selections from the sourcetexts of the various myths, and when the authors do write their own material about the selections and such, their chapters feel more like news articles. This causes reading the book to feel more like reading a book for enjoyment than for being taught. I think this is a very positive thing, since the book feels less pedagogue-ish and yet is still quite informative. The only thing I see missing is family trees of the divine lineages, which would be most useful for studying Norse mythology, to use the most prominent example.

I also found it unfortunate that the sections on Norse Myth use Sturluson's Prose Edda for the source text rather than the Poetic Edda, the more legitimate source. Apparently they did this to show how mythic texts rationalize their contents. In Sturluson's case, he decided to claim that the ancient Icelandic people simply forgot the Christian faith over time, even though the Germanic religion was practiced all over northern Europe for centuries before Christianity ever existed. Gotta love that medieval scholarship.

Average text selection; problematic interpretation and editing

I am using this text in a "World Mythology" course; it was assigned to me.

The texts are adequate, but not outstanding. The following is a partial list of major texts, specifically the ones I have chosen to focus on:

Hesiod
Ovid
Enuma Elish
Epic of Gilgamesh
Genesis
Prose Edda
texts from southwestern Amerind tribes
Africa (specifically the "Mwindo epic") and Afro-American trickster stories
Ramayana
a few texts from Homeric Hymns and Apollodorus
a reading from *Gods and Myths of Northern Europe*.

Major topics include: creation, destruction; gods, heroes, and tricksters, and ritual.

Other texts--ones I will not be using--include a Chinese creation story, and "Oedipus the King." Nor will I be using extensive material on Joseph Campbell, structuralism, Mary Douglas on ritual, and Jungian and Proppian interpretations. Campbell is especially problematic because most scholarly specialists in myth studies reject his approach. In fact, I have a lecture on "why we will not be studying Campbell." (In short, he assumes what he needs to prove: that there is a universal hero myth. To make his theory work is to "pound square blocks into round holes." The editors' attempt to interpret the Epic of Gilgamesh as an example of the "mono myth" is especially silly, and is good evidence why the approach doesn't work.) I'm not using the other secondary material since we barely have time to interact the primary and important texts, as it is.

I understand the choice for the Prose Edda over the Poetic Edda, and the editors correctly emphasize the fact that Snorri is a Christian, looking at the Norse stories as a dead tradition. But they don't give the student any sense for the tradition that Snorri is reinterpreting. The text used in the Epic of Gilgamesh is old, an amalgam of different *versions*--Standard, Old Babylonian, and Hittite. There is no explanation of the textual-critical problems of this approach. There are newer, "rawer" texts available. As noted, this amalgam permits the editors to try to shoehorn the Epic to fit Campbell's mono myth, even if there it doesn't work anyway.

Finally, The editors might be fine scholars of literature, but they simply don't understand mythic and religious texts. One egregious example: In the Ramayana, the second wife wants the kingship for her own son, instead of Rama. Her maid reminds her that the king has promised her two "boons," and decides to "call in the chips" by demanding that the king give the kingship to her son and exile Rama. To get it, she goes into a "chamber of wrath." The editors say that this chamber is for mourning loved ones, and that for her son *not* to get the kingship would be for him to die (p. 211).

That didn't sound right. Ancient peoples don't respond to death with "wrath," but with "mourning." They are two very different emotions. It took about an hour of internet research, using literal translations of the Ramayana, to verify my suspicion. The room is not a room for mourning, but, in one translation, a "sulking room". It is a room in the women's quarters, when they are mad about something and want to sulk. The king wants to have sex with her, finds her in this room, and driven by his lust, helplessly gives in to her demands. It gives a very different "spin" on the story. Furthermore, the threatened death is not the death of the son, but the death of wife, if she doesn't get what she wants.

Another much simpler example: neither Aphrodite nor Ishtar are the goddess of love. They are goddesses of *lust,* sexual passion. (In the Epic of Gilgamesh, Ishtar is explicitly linked to war.)

Another scholarly problem is the editors' simplistic use of the documentary hypothesis in interpreting Genesis. That's "old hat"; there are much better contemporary approaches.

So okay for texts, but be prepared to do a lot of research and extra reading to get the full meaning and nuances of some of the texts: especially the Epic of Gilgamesh, the Prose Edda (and the Norse tradition in general), and the Ramayana.
