About the Author

H. E. Bates was born in 1905 in the shoe-making town of Rushden, Northamptonshire, and educated at Kettering Grammar School. After leaving school, he worked as a reporter and as a clerk in a leather warehouse.
Many of his stories depict life in the rural Midlands, particularly his native Northamptonshire, where he spent many hours wandering the countryside.
His first novel, The Two Sisters (1926) was published by Jonathan Cape when he was just twenty. Many critically acclaimed novels and collections of short stories followed.
During WWII he was commissioned into the RAF solely to write short stories, which were published under the pseudonym "Flying Officer X". His first financial success was Fair Stood the Wind for France (1944), followed by two novels about Burma, The Purple Plain (1947) and The Jacaranda Tree (1949) and one set in India, The Scarlet Sword (1950). Other well-known novels include Love for Lydia (1952) and The Feast of July (1954).
His most popular creation was the Larkin family which featured in five novels beginning with The Darling Buds of May in 1958. The later television adaptation was a huge success.
Many other stories were adapted for the screen, the most renowned being The Purple Plain (1947) starring Gregory Peck, and The Triple Echo (1970) with Glenda Jackson and Oliver Reed.
H. E. Bates married in 1931, had four children and lived most of his life in a converted granary near Charing in Kent. He was awarded the CBE in 1973, shortly before his death in 1974.

Gourmet and Daily Recipes For Healing Leaky Gut

This cookbook kicks off discussing in the forward and introduction, the rise in autoimmune diseases in America, the role that leaky gut plays and how these medical conditions can be cured or symptoms greatly improved by eating the Paleo way. The fact that eating Paleo may be challenging and overwhelming for the beginner is stated but hope is planted that after the intial gut healing protocol is done people may begin to test to see which foods they can reintroduce and tolerate. So there is hope that not all must remain on a very strict Paleo Diet for the long term. Variety of foods is stressed which is a good recommendation for all people.

The chapters are: breakfast, meat, seafood, vegetables, dessert and a last chapter on sauces, dips, condiments and broths. I would classify a good number of these as gourmet recipes or not your typical weeknight dinner items or expensive foods such as: salmon and avocado tartare, liver pate with apple, deep fried shrimp, oysters, mussels, and thyme and prosciutto wrapped trout rolls. There are some odd things, I guess stretching our variety: crispy beef tongue wraps, rabbit, and fried sardines. All the vegetables seem doable or things I already make and find easy. The desserts are mostly frozen sorbets, granita, popsicles, and a pudding. For breakfast when eating eggless (full Paleo) it winds up being foods that Americans associate with lunch or dinner, savory dishes such as sausage gravey benedict on a portabello mushroom or breakfast meatloaf (with onion, garlic powder, sage, oregano and thyme and pork rinds as some of the ingredients).

For the past two years under my doctor's advice I have been shifting my diet back and forth from grain-free to candida diet (no grains, sugar, alcohol, soy, dairy, corn). I've gone off seafood and fish due to intolerance by blood test. The purpose of this review is not to judge the Paleo diet. I have known about leaky gut for almost 20 years so the advice about healing that and about inflammation issues and health are preaching to the choir.

This cookbook has excellent tempting photos all in full color the same type as are on the cover and the font is large and legible. However there is still a lot of white space so I'd have liked even larger font. This hardcover book is of nice quality and is a nice large page size.

If you are looking for easy, cheap, fast recipes for weeknight cooking perhaps some other book would be a better fit. This cookbook is definatly for those who are open to cooking more complicated recipes from different cultures and for those not intimidated with long ingredient lists. It takes multiple ingredients to add complexity and flavor so I understand! These often use expensive foods and perhaps are better for families for weekend gourmet cooking or for parties when duck legs or oysters on the half shell are more typical fare.

I rate this 5 stars = I Love It because we are weekend gourmet cooks who throw dinner parties at least three times a month with foods like ribs, oysters, and lamb.

Reasons why I like Nourish:

1) Flavor!

Rachael emphasizes repeatedly that packing flavor into her AIP life was very important to her. By extension, we reap the benefits! I was lucky enough to be sent a sample of one of her finishing salts, Rosemary-Leek Salt, and that alone showed me how much incredible flavor would be in every bite of the recipes included in this book. (I may or may not go to my kitchen, open the jar and smell it just because!)

2) Bright and beautiful.

This book is as much a feast for the eyes as it is a feast for the tummy. Let’s face it. We buy cookbooks not just to enjoy new dishes, but also to be inspired. Rachael has obviously taken pains to present her recipes at their most bright, delicious best. The photos scream both, “Eat me!” and “Health!” Who doesn’t want that when they open a new cookbook?

3) Intimidation not included.

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I just want to glance at a recipe and go, “Yep. Easy. Done.” If I have to read through lists of strange ingredients (and that is saying something, ‘cause after three years AIP I’m pretty open to ingredients of all kinds) and step after step of complex instructions, I get intimidated. I’m a home cook on a healing mission, not the head chef at a five-star restaurant. Rachael has thoughtfully kept the average cook in mind. I actually trade one of my farmers cooking for meat. Twice a month I plan a menu for her and we do a huge batch cook over several hours. That big process needs to be as easy as possible. Recently we incorporated three of Rachael’s recipes and I am happy to report it was a breeze, even in the midst of a busy batch cook!

It's for people who suffer with autoimmune illnesses, not a weight loss diet.

Please don't buy this book thinking it's going to help you lose weight. It's not a "diet" cookbook. It's a SPECIAL diet cookbook. You know, for special purpose. It's for the millions of people suffering with any of the hundreds of autoimmune diseases that can make eating a tricky thing to do.

A co-worker was curious and opened it up to a page about organ meats. Yes. There are recipes that involve these nutrient rich foods. Some of the ingredients are less common than others, but all are written clearly with great insight to the benefits of the foods you are preparing. I'm eager to try the Caramelized Brussels Sprouts with Lime & Crispy Shallots as well as the pickled shrimp recipe. Coconut Oatmeal (5 ways) is brilliant and very versatile.

This seems to be the author's first book, though she's a prolific blogger at Meatified dot com. If you're suffering, you owe it to yourself to look into the AIP (Autoimmune Protocol). "Paleo Living for Autoimmune Disease". I've been on an AIP journey of my own and I find the information in this book to be very well written, easy to understand, and based on scientific evidence. Reading it has opened areas of research to me that I have not explored before. I expect that the recipes will not disappoint.

I rather like the hardcover format. There's no fussy dust jacket to tear and the binding is modern but appealing. It's an attractive book.

Mark Sandle is a principal lecturer in Russian and Soviet History at De Montfort University. He recently won an award as a DMU Distinguished Teacher (for which he was nominated by his students). He is fascinated by ideas and their impact and loves looking at the broad sweep of history and finding patterns to help people make sense of the past. His previous publications include A Short History of Soviet Socialism (1999) and Brezhnev Reconsidered (2002).

simple answer

We hear the word communism so often from the time of our childhood. In a majority of cases the definition is connected with the Soviet Union. It has a lot of emotional connotations for those of us who grew up in the Cold War. But if we honestly ask, "What does this word mean?" most of us would not really be able to give an answer. Mark Sandle gives us an answer: When, how, and why communism was born, was it ever really achieved, and is it a dead philosophy? It is a plain, direct, and simple book free of prejudice.

"This book is an extensive reworking of the Jesus story with strong Theosophical and Spiritualist influences. Of interest is the attempt to fill in the two decade gap in the Jesus's traditional biography. According to Dowling, Jesus spent a lot of time in the mystical East where he learned esoteric methods from the masters, while rebelling against the caste system. The narrative, unfortunately, has numerous historical inconsistencies, including Jesus meeting historical figures who lived hundreds of years before or after the first century, e.g. Mencius. The book has Jesus studying in India in the Orissa area; while this is an historically important ceremonial area, it didn't come into prominence until nearly a millenium later.

None of this lessens the charm or the esoteric insight of this book. Nor should its subterranean impact on popular spirituality in the United States be underestimated. The Aquarian Gospel was rediscovered during the spiritual ferment of the 1960s; a beat-up paperback copy of this book was de rigeur in every hippie pad, and it no doubt played an unsung role in naming the 'Age of Aquarius'. The Aquarian Gospel was probably one of the catalysts for the 'Jesus freak' movement. About the Author:

"Levi H. Dowling, (May 18, 1844 - August 13, 1911) born at Bellville, Ohio. His father, of Scottish and Welsh descent, was a pioneer preacher among the Disciples of Christ. Levi was always a student of the deeper things of life. At the age of thirteen, in his first public debate, he took the negative side against a Presbyterian Elder on The Everlasting Punishment of the Wicked.

Levi began preaching at the age of sixteen; and at the age of eighteen was pastor of a small church. He entered the United States Army at the age of twenty as Chaplain, and served in this capacity to the end of the Civil War. In 1866-1867 he was a student at Northwestern Christian University at Indianapolis, Indiana. The next year he began publishing Sunday School Literature, issuing Sunday School Lesson Papers, Song Books, and a Children's Sunday School Paper. Much of his time was devoted to the cause of Prohibition. He was a graduate of two medical colleges and practised medicine for a number of years. He finally retired from the medical profession to resume literary work.

Even as a child, he was impressed with the sensitiveness of the finer ethers and believed that in some manner they were sensitized plates on which sounds, even thoughts, were recorded. With avidity he entered into the deeper studies of etheric vibration, determined to solve the great mysteries of the heavens for himself. Forty years he spent in study and silent meditation, and then he found himself in that stage of spiritual consciousness that permitted him to enter the domain of these superfine ethers and become familiar with their mysteries. During the meditation, it was claimed that he was able to repeat events, as many times as necessary, in order to provide us with a perfect transcript. He spent many months transcribing the events he directly witnessed – in The Book of God's Remembrance also known as The Akashic Records. His transcription is commonly known as The Aquarian Gospel. He then learned that the imaginings of his boyhood days were founded upon veritable facts, and that every thought of every living thing is there recorded. As he was a boy, he also had a vision in which he was told that he was to build a white city. This vision was repeated three times with years intervening. Great book. Gives you strategies for vocabulary and helps you with different ideas for vocabulary. Also gives the purpose of the strategy and gives how you can apply and make connections to the strategy. It took way to long to get the book from Amazon. Thankfully my teacher hadn't assigned any assignments from that book. Other than the long wait the book is great!

Yogesh Verma is a certified nutritional therapist specializing in weight loss and chronic disease prevention. He has been a wellness blogger since 2010 and has published several articles on nutrition for disease prevention in local magazines and periodicals such as Siliconeer, Khabar, and India West. He was also a featured health expert on local Bay Area radio talk shows on KLOK 1170 AM. Excellent Book with great insights into our body system

An excellent and concise read. The book does an excellent job of simplifying the explanation of how the food system works within our body the importance and role of various elements of our digestive system - fat, proteins, leptin/ghrelin, carbohydrates, insulin, and how the various parts of our body interact - liver, blood system, the gut etc. The book helps you build a great mental model of how the overall system works which then helps you decide what to eat and what not to eat. It also has great pointers on an actual diet plan. Would certainly recommend it to anyone who wants to understand this stuff and break away from what media induces into our brain about fat and weight loss. Think different, think contrarian....dont follow the crowd.

A very well written book focused on the health and well-being @ a low prize.

Good approach to developing new routines

I've read several books on how to incorporate ayurveda into modern love the last few months. I liked the gradual approach here. She recommends reading a chapter a week, each time tuning p to add a new habit too your routine. Although I had already starred a few, the gradual approach to new routines helped me stick with it, even without a "support group." Stillman is practical and knowledgeable. The only negative thing I have to say is that the kindle version was not well proof-read. This is nothing major, but the editors may want to have a look... The content, however, is still good.

Awesome learning opportunity from a talented Ayurvedic Practitioner

It has been an eye opening, overwhelming experience delving into Ayurveda with Cate Stillnan's book and videos. At age 67 I thought I had a fairly good idea how my body worked ... boy, was I wrong! I love the teaching style and clear, concise teaching Cate provides. I will be learning and enhancing my life thanks to my fortune finding Cate!!

For big shifts, start here...

I've been following Cate's work for many years, have done the Yogi Detox several times, and have made some deep shifts as a result of her work. Cate has the ability to translate ayurvedic concepts to modern Western language and make them easily applicable. Body Thrive is an easy read that bears re-reading; while it's user-friendly (its organized in thoughtful, progressive chapters that you can dip into or move through sequentially), it also provides great opportunities for going deeper in any area of life/health that needs more attention. Cate's a master at presenting ways to "hack" resistance and internal obstacles, making the process of making significant long-term changes feel more accessible. If you are looking for a book that will help you address the biggest health issues that impact overall wellness - sleep, diet, stress - this is a very good place to start. If you want to learn more about ayurveda, this is also a great introduction for yogis and non-yogis alike.
