About the Author
Jane Cobb, BA, MLS, has a BA in English Literature from the University of Victoria (1979), and a Masters Degree in Library Science from the University of British Columbia (1981). She has worked as a Children’s Librarian serving families and children in public libraries in BC for twenty-seven years (1982 – 2009). Most recently Jane was the Coordinator of Parent-Child Mother Goose Programs for the Vancouver Public Library in Canada where she created fifteen multi-lingual outreach programs for families living in Vancouver (2001 – 2009). She has also been a sessional instructor of Children’s Services at UBC and Langara College(1994 – 2007); and was one of four provincial trainers for the Toronto-based Parent-Child Mother Goose Program (2002 – 2009). She is the author of two classic resources for Children’s Librarians and Early Childhood Educators: I’m a Little Teapot: Presenting Preschool Storytime (1996) beloved by K teachers, librarians and early childhood educators alike, and What’ll I Do with the Baby-o: Nursery Rhymes, Songs, and Stories for Babies (2007) which won a Mom’s Choice Gold Award in 2009. Great for parents

I am a parent of a 4 month old baby and I love this book! There are some things in it that don't really apply to parents, like sample programs for educators/librarians but most of it is great for parents too. There are pages upon pages of rhymes and songs that my baby loves, a CD for learning some of the lesser-known songs, stories to tell to babies, baby book recommendations, and interesting information about baby brain development and what parents and caregivers can do to help foster their babies development. A fun book for anyone with a baby up to age 2.

Clive Staples Lewis (1898-1963) was one of the intellectual giants of the twentieth century and arguably the most influential Christian writer of his day. Made for a Quick Buck, and why it matters to the publishers' and Walter Hooper's bank account.

This is yet another book in a series of publications obviously aimed at making a quick buck for the publishers. Aware that anything bearing his name will generally sell quite well, the publishers and Walter Hooper has for the past forty years being issuing posthumous works, anthologies, and throw-away publications such as this. Walter Hooper is Lewis's literary executor, and there have been some serious accusations regarding his handling of Lewis's work in the past four decades, including passing off forged work as Lewis's original work, and incorporating blatantly bad edits into already published works. MADE FOR HEAVEN is actually one in a series of repackaged books by C. S. Lewis, and are primarily aimed at people buying for college and high school graduations or other type of gifts. Rather pointless to anyone who actually reads C. S. Lewis.

Not that there's a problem with devotionals, etc. But seeing C. S. Lewis endlessly repackaged like this, long after he's dead, is getting pretty disgusting. Those wanting to get into C. S. Lewis should just go buy a box set of his books, not buy these worthless chapbooks and hodge-podge publications. If it reaches people for Christ, that's always a good thing. But as far as their intentions go, books like this feel like Hooper and the publishers are just trying to make a quick buck.

C.S. Lewis was a rare individual. One of the few non-clerics to be recognised as a theologian by the Anglican church, he put forth the case for Christianity in general in ways that many Christians beyond the Anglican world can accept, and a clear description for non-Christians of what Christian faith and practice should be. Indeed, Lewis says in his introduction that this text (or indeed, hardly any other he produced) will help in deciding between Christian denominations. While he describes himself as a 'very ordinary layman' in the Church of England, he looks to the broader picture of Christianity, particularly for those who have little or no background. The discussion of division points rarely wins a convert, Lewis observed, and so he leaves the issues of ecclesiology and high theology differences to 'experts'. Lewis is of course selling himself short in this regard, but it helps to reinforce his point.

This book derives from several of his works: 'The Great Divorce', 'The Problem of Pain', and 'Weight of Glory'. With regard to the Great Divorce, Lewis here derives the title in antithesis of William Blake, who wrote of the marriage of Heaven and Hell. He also is paying tribute to that kind of literature with a long pedigree (including such luminaries as Dante) who write of a visit to Heaven and Hell. In his narrative, Lewis introduces many characters who, the reader slowly discovers, are not in Heaven because they refuse to let go of something, even something rather miniscule, of the Hell in which they find themselves. 'If we accept Heaven we shall not be able to retain even the smallest and most intimate souvenirs of Hell,' Lewis states. However, upon letting go, one finds that nothing has in fact been lost.

In 'The Problem of Pain', Lewis deals with the subject that confounds ministers, theologians and philosophers throughout the ages - why would a loving God not put an end to agony in the world? Why does an all-powerful God permit suffering? The excerpt here derives from Lewis' exposition beginning with Paul's epistle to the Romans - 'the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that shall be revealed in us.' Lewis looks generally at the problem as an interplay between self, desire, experience and God. This small excerpt does not answer the question definitively, but hopefully with inspire readers to go to the primary text.

In the 'Weight of Glory', Lewis talks a lot about virtue and the style of living; we are called to live in such a way as to bring heaven as close as possible. 'Weight of Glory' is actually a sermon, which contains memorable passages that hearken back to the gospel message of seeing people as potential heavenly beings - as Jesus likened the visitation and good-deed-doing to 'the least of these' as doing so to him, so too does Lewis state that 'there are no ordinary people'; each person is a neighbour in God, and as such, a possessor of the same holiness as we are called to exhibit and as Christ embodied in the world.

This book is part of a pocket-book series being produced by Harper SanFrancisco, several books that highlight the key points of C.S. Lewis' religious/theological writing. Less than 100 pages, with plenty of white space and good-sized print, these books are easily read, but invite contemplation far beyond the scope of their diminutive size.

The proof of heaven

Lewis sneaks up on us in this work. He takes our inward longings and deepest desires and challenges our superficial conclusions and intellectual criticisms of the need for heaven and even the first blush repulsion of some images of heaven. Then he turns them on their head and speaks deeply to our souls in language and metaphor that we all secretly identify with - leading to a harsh ( at first thought ) but hopeful view of not only heaven's promise of the future, but necessity for daily living w fellow human beings.

Complete Guide - Excellent resource

From Entrepreneur to Infopreneur is a wonderful resource for anyone who sees the value in creating a passive income source from their current area of expertise - either hobby or profession. If you don't understand or see the value in becoming an Infopreneur, then this book is definitely for you.

The book is well written, organized and full of valuable information. It offers an easy to understand, step-by-step guide for the entrepreneur to transform their business and become an information marketer.

It is very easy for the entrepreneur to under estimate the market potential for their knowledge. Stephanie does an excellent job of illustrating how to take the knowledge we have acquired and to package it into a valuable product that can generate income on a passive basis. The internet has made it possible - actually easy - for anyone to package and sell their knowledge worldwide.

While it is often referred to as passive income, Stephanie is quick to point out that creating an informational product is simply the first step. If you are not willing to actively market your product/idea then you will have wasted a lot of time and energy in creating it. The income might be passive but there is this huge need for very active marketing. But do not despair. All the steps and instructions for effective marketing are in the book.

The book is full of hints, helpful tips and resources. I had read less than 30 pages when I was given a suggestion that made me put the book down and implement it. There are literally hundreds of helpful website addresses in the book. In addition there are profiles of successful infopreneurs, explaining what they do and how they did it.

One other extremely valuable lesson that is hammered home throughout the book is the value of becoming a recognized expert in your field. There is nothing like publishing book(s), articles, special reports, etc, that will establish your credibility as an expert. This can dramatically increase your value and thus income from other sources.

The book has way too much information to absorb in just one reading. If you are serious about becoming an informational marketer, read it a couple of times and then use it as a handy reference. A great resource for those just starting out or the seasoned infopreneur.

A Worth-While Investment

In the last few days, I completed reading Stephanie Chandler's excellent book, From Entrepreneur to Infopreneur: Make Money with books, E-Books and Information Products. She points to some different resources than I've used in the past and has solid information. I liked her focus as she says in the preface, "My goal is always to exceed my customer expectations and this strategy has served me well in every business endeavor." I identified with this goal because it's also been my intention as I've created products or magazine articles or my teaching at writers' conferences (like this coming week at the Florida Writers Association). It was good to read Chandler's line, "There is an eager market of buyers out there. My goal is to show you how to develop and market your own products. One of the greatest advantages of selling information products is that they can essentially become passive income--money you make while you sleep. Once the work is done and you've created a high-quality product, and you've automated the product sales and delivery process, your primary role will be to continue marketing your products. That's where the real fun begins."

Here's several basics that Chandler highlights for the reader saying, "There is no single secret to success, though there are many tips to help you along the way...

Everyone is an expert at something: Whatever your expertise, whether it's fly fishing, yoga, parenting, knitting, sales or customer service, you have something to teach others who know less than you do.

The Internet is a powerful venue for reaching customers: Learn to maximize your reach in order to run an efficient and profitable business.

Marketing is an investment in your business: Rare is the business that succeeds without marketing. Try a variety of strategies and repeat the ones that work best.

Don't be afraid to ask questions: Nobody has all the answers and most people are willing to help. Just ask!

Invest in other people's information products: Not only will you have the chance to learn something new, but you can evaluate the content and begin to understand the formula for success. It's also good karma to support people whose work you admire.

Persevere: My favorite word in the English language. There will be days when you feel as if you are spinning your wheels for nothing. But eventually, with enough effort, something magical happens. It all starts to come together.

Never stop learning: I don't care what industry you are in. Things change. Rules change. People change. Stay on top of your area of expertise. Learn about new technology. Remember how much fun it can be to learn something new and how rewarding it is to succeed." (page xi to xii)

My reason for ranking this book at four stars instead of five relates to some of the choices for the Infopreneur Profiles scattered throughout the book. I'm personally familiar with a number of these people. In particular one of the people profiled (I'll not say which one here) isn't in what I would categorize as "successful." I'm on a large online group with this person who is regularly sending out "prayer" for financially related issues. This single choice made me question whether Chandler prodded with enough questions when she selected these people to highlight. Yet even with this shortcoming, the information in this book is solid and I recommend From Entrepreneur to Infopreneur. Read it and you will be sure to learn something.

Best Book I've Read All Year! (And I read TON of Books)

Every year I go through about 200 books not to mention audio CD's and DVD's I watch on marketing, sales, motivation, getting things done and more.
This book had some ideas I had never thought of or heard. (And no, I'm not new to this.)

I was really surprised when I got it. From the other reviews, I expected a good book, but it was way better than what I expected.

The profiles of people who have "been there done that" were great.
I love reading things like that as I suspect a lot of people do.

Not only did the people who have been successful give a profile of what they've done and more, they even gave step by step of how they did a lot of it.

In addition to the profiles and great tips, there are tons of helpful resources in the book. Pretty much covering all aspects of selling info products in all formats. (Ebooks, printed books, videos, audio CD's, and tons more)

The people who gave it two stars either can't read or didn't get it.
(To be fair to them, there aren't a lot of pictures in the book so maybe that's what made it harder for them to understand)

Not my favourite Winchester

I loved Krakatoa, Map, and Atlantic, so was looking forward to seeing Winchester's approach to the Pacific.

Overall, I didn't find this book as enjoyable or uplifting a tale as the other histories spun by the same author. A bit of a downer, Pacific came across as troublesome.

The advice to budding writers to "write what you know"; Winchester seems out of his element in this book.

Perhaps it was the very limiting timeline that the author allowed himself that dictated the scope of the book? This undermines the opening of the work which tries to emphasize the immense size and span of the Pacific. If such superlatives are an essential part of the Pacific, why limit the time frame to a portion of a human life? Hardly conveys the story of immense-ness.

I found it unfortunate too, that the bulk of the book focused on the "big boys"; the USA and China with very little treatment of other Pacific bordering societies and surprisingly little focus on the Islands of the Pacific. Was NOTHING happening in Canada, Mexico, Central or South America in the second half of the 20th Century? Was this a remarkably dull time for Eastern Russia? New Zealand gets utterly ignored despite being ahead of the world curve in a number of environmental and social spheres. Had not ALL of the currently independent Pacific Islands Nations become so in this time period?

True, Asia and the Americas have coastlines along the Pacific, but ARE they the Pacific in the same way that the Island societies are? But perhaps this is another limitation imposed by the timeline.

Similarly the books grasp of "Pacific" was cast a bit wide at times. The 2004 Tsunami was invoked in the book, but as I recall this was primarily an Indian Ocean phenomena.

The vignettes presented seemed cliche and as though they had already been told a thousand times. I was hoping for something fresher or more "off the well beaten track". I was hoping to encounter more uncommon history such as, perhaps, the major populations shifts in some places - such as the island of Taiwan - its first Australoid/Melanesian peoples replaced with later arriving Austronesians, marginalised by Han from mainland China. Granted this would have been well outside of the time focus of the book. However, no mention of the series of serious crowd diseases to have erupted from the Pacific's shores recently either - SARS, Swine Flu, Bird Flu, etc. No serious discussion of commercial fishing outside of marine reserves being created to keep it in check. I find it remarkable that no mention was given to the post WWII upheavals in Indonesia - convulsions of Nation building, Events in Timor L'este, the current situation in Western New Guinea. No hint that on the other side of the globe Pinochet was ruling in Chile which would have nicely introduced the US role in helping Coup d'etats along and the often disastrous results that can come from this intervention. Bolivia exercising its claim for access to the Pacific would have been another interesting story to have seen included from a more diverse perspective. All would have fit in the time frame of the book and have been a bit less "old hat" than tropes of "Aggressive, rule- bucking China", "Busy Body, control-freak America", and "Lunatic Hermit-like North Korea".

The book was readable, but left me thankful for my library membership and that I hadn't purchased my own copy.

Unmissable and Surprising

The Pacific is such a large subject that any book written on it runs the risk of covering a few subjects well or a lot of subjects in a rather sketchy manner. The authour seems to have defeated this dichotomy by choosing a few subjects to cover comprehensively but choosing those subjects in such a way as to create a deep, overall impression of the area. This is a clever trick that all writers aspire to, but few manage to bring off. Simon Winchester has nailed it.

We spend our lives sailing around the Pacific and recommend this book for anyone even remotely interested in this area.

I've been buying Mr Winchester's books as they appear for the last 15 years and am rarely disappointed. Pacific is one of his best. A fascinating collection of 'snapshots' of places, events and issues that indicate where this whole area - and in some cases the world - may be headed. And, as always, really really well-written.

Rich mortgage - mortgage poor

For a book dealing with finances I found this to be a very light easy read with some very interesting perspectives on what I would call non traditional veiws for building wealth . It has changed the way I will look at my own mortgages in the future . If you liked Rich Dad Poor Dad , The Go Giver or Who Moved My Cheese ? you will be sure to love this book .
