Engineering design solutions do not exist in a vacuum but within the context of a business opportunity. Given that every problem has multiple solutions, the issue is: How does one rationally select the design with the most favorable economic result? The answer to this question can also be put forth in two words: engineering economy. Engineering economy provides a systematic framework for evaluating the economic aspects of competing design solutions. Our society is losing the art of participatory democracy. Strata councils, volunteer clubs, non-profit societies, corporate boards, unions, NGOs, co-ops, parent advisory councils, service clubs, charities; all of these are suffering with the same general malaise. We, as a society, as a body of individual citizens, have forgotten how to do democracy.

In our busy lives no one has time to read the 700+ pages of Robert’s Rules of Order just so they can attend their strata condo AGM. Most people haven’t even heard of Robert’s Rules, yet “Bob’s Book” is the overwhelmingly dominant rules system. Alienated and disenfranchised from the process, many just stay home. In that vacuum our democracy is floundering.

Recently some have tried with noble intent to reverse this slide. Experiments in “consensus” models by the Occupy movement and others, while laudable, have suffered from the fatal naivet� of idealism divorced from pragmatic experience. By abandoning the principle of Majority Rule their attempted surgery to save democracy cut too deeply into the skeleton of the patient, creating a system that can not survive a collision with the messy facts of everyday reality.

The failure of both Robert’s Rules of Order and the Consensus models in the everyday world leaves the void of participatory democracy unfilled. The Democracy 2.0 rule system is designed to fill that void, as a democratic system for everyday use by everyday people facing everyday realities. It is pragmatic and simple. It keeps what works and throws out the rest. At only 39 pages, it’s the accessible, user-friendly, Keep-It-Simple-Stupid rules of order system that anyone can navigate with about as much investment as learning to operate that TV remote, or installing the latest social media app on your smartphone. Each of us has learned harder things for more trivial reasons.

Democracy 2.0 will not grind to gridlock the moment someone asserts their individual rights or refuses to bow to groupthink. Nor is it so formal and convoluted that it requires a degree in law or political science to navigate. It preserves the essential lessons learned from 2500 years of democratic trial and error, making it robust enough to channel strident disagreement into productive discourse while rigorous enough to insure the process is simple, efficient and decisive.

In short, the two-and-a-half-millennia year-old operating system of everyday democracy needs an upgrade to make it work for today's citizens. C.D. Madson is a certified parliamentarian, community activist, and former real estate professional. He is currently a member of the Parliamentarian's Association of British Columbia and the National Association of Parliamentarians. He has degrees from the University of Victoria, Camosun College and has held licenses as a realtor and property manager in the province of British Columbia. Having served on numerous boards, councils, committees and non-profit organizations, he has amassed a wealth of practical wisdom over more than two decades in the trenches of everyday democracy.

This book is a treasure for the innumerable organizations that find themselves chasing their tails, or mired in the mirk by conflicting or difficult personalities.

If your organization is being held back by a lack of clear governance, Democracy 2.0 will provide you with a clear and (most importantly) concise road map of how to free your collective vision from both the fetters of autocratic tyranny, as well as the obfuscation of so-called "consensus" models, that aren't actually models at all, but thinly veiled avoidance and fear of conflict.

I have been involved for years in non-profit organizations, who often give lip-service to rules of order, like "Robert's Rules", but honestly, who has actually read, much less understood the hundreds of rules presented there? How many of them are even applicable in small or even less-than-gigantic organizations?

Mr. Madson has deftly stripped it down to the brass tacks. What you need to know to get your endeavour running like a well oiled machine.

Just the introductory chapter on the fundamentals of democratic process and the foundation of rules of order is worth more than the cost of this book.

You will find yourself wondering why nobody every told you this stuff!
You will wonder why this isn't being taught in every school?!
You will want to share this with every organization you are involved in.

The text reads very easily and anyone can become proficient in a short time

Democracy 2.0 is a must-have for anyone involved in governance or democratic decision making at any level. Rules of order for meetings (Robert's or otherwise) were confusing and the people I worked with only seemed to have a partial understanding of them. Democracy 2.0 spells out the rules of order in the most elegant manner I've seen. It is simple, straight forward, and to the point. The text reads very easily and anyone can become proficient in a short time.

This is an excellent rules system for small to medium size organizations, and also provides a solid foundation to build on for those who wish to study the full version of Robert's Rules or other systems.

Seemingly with great ease C.D. Madson succeeds in presenting otherwise dry content in form of an easy to digest formula. He manages to find the balance between educating and entertaining his readers by presenting the material in a compact, straightforward and comprehensible way while keeping the conversation interesting and flowing.
This books reads indeed as if I am having a face to face discussion with the author; I smile, I nod, I think - hard sometimes. Above all, I am learning a ton of stuff I never thought I would ever get a grasp of without sweating my way through a multiple day intensive seminar.

First published in Latin in 1516, Thomas More's Utopia is one of the most influential books in the Western philosophical and literary tradition and one of the supreme achievements of Renaissance humanism. This is the first edition of Utopia since 1965 (the Yale edition) to combine More's Latin text with an English translation, and also the first edition to provide a Latin text that is at once accurate and readable. The text is based on the early editions (with the Froben edition of March 1518 as copy-text), but spelling and punctuation have been regularised in accordance with modern practices. The translation is a revised version of the acclaimed Adams translation, which also appears in Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought. The edition, which incorporates the results of recent Utopian scholarship, includes an introduction, textual apparatus, a full commentary and a guide to the voluminous scholarly and critical literature on Utopia.

Poor Quality

The information in the book is terrific, if you can keep the book together. This book is junk compared to previous additions. The pages fall right out, everyone in my class is experiencing the same problem. This is a book a student is going to want to keep, but can't because it is so poorly made.

Canadian VS American Editions

This is a great learning tool for the student or at home learner. BE AWARE that there are two different editions....one for the Canadian Market and one for the American Market. The Canadian version has a lime with a spoon of lime zest on the front cover. The American one is the artichoke. There are differences in the submitted recipies i.e. from Canadian Chefs

Excellent text for basic skills.

Although I was also disappointed that the book did not come with the CD, I have found it a great read with a wealth of useful information presented in an organized, easy to read fashion. This is a staple book used in culinary programs, and I will be keeping this book long after I graduate. I have recommended it to friends who want to learn to be better cooks without going to school for it. The chef who is teaching one of my culinary classes told us that if you only have two books on cooking, he'd recommend this one and The Joy of Cooking. Another great feature of this book is that the pages are coated (that's what makes the book so incredibly heavy) so that they last longer when you inevitably spill something on them while using the book in the kitchen. I agree that a spiral binding might have been a better choice but I have mostly found the book will lay flat no matter where you need it kept open to.
