About the Author

Michael Butkus was trained at Otis Parsons in Los Angeles and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. He has taught illustration and rendering techniques, along with character design and visual development, to art industry professionals and commercial art students. Michael has worked on more than 2,500 films in the areas of advertising, movie poster art, set design, and character design. Michael also invented and illustrated hundreds of characters for Lucasfilms' Shadow of the Empire. Clients include Paramount, Warner Brothers, Universal, Disney, DreamWorks, and LucasArts, as well as a number of toy companies that employ his imaginative creations and conceptual renderings for product design. Michael lives in Los Angeles, CA.

Demonically Inspirational

This book is aimed at the intermediate digital or traditional artist who already knows how to draw but who just needs some inspiration and a little guidance. It briefly covers the basic history, facts, and accessories for fallen angels before diving into how to portray them. Almost all of the art is in a dramatic realistic style that evokes an immediate emotional response from the viewer. None are over the top, even the one toonish work. These depictions have a dreadful realism to them. You could actually run into one of these characters on a particularly dark street one dry stormy night.

The art in this book is freaking beautiful! While tradional angel art books usually focus on countless etheric females unfettered by the cares of the world, the majority of fallen angels in this book are undeniably male with a worldly pureness of purpose. The ladies that are present range from plagued damsel to coldly efficient warrior to demonic future ex-girlfriend. The men are modelled on fiendishly rugged bad boy types and are visually stunning examples of masculinity. There are a few purely demonic angels and the Death skeleton also makes a couple of requisite appearances.

If you are a beginning artitst, this book is not going to teach you how to draw them. Instead it shows step by step the design choices made to create each artwork. If you are just looking for a coffee table book of hawwt girlz or guyz with wings, this book is ideal for inspiration as it really puts a new seductive spin on fallen angels. Fans of Supernatural will love this book!

Great insight into the lineart -> digital art process

This will be a very biased review. I saw this book years ago at a craft store and it was much too expensive (for my taste anyway). I see it here and I just had to have it. The instructions are very clear and pictures are also very vivid. Love the artist's style and, though biased, I would recommend to anyone who finds the supernatural intriguing (and is interested in learning the process in creating the works of art depicted)

Note: 1) The book explains how to do the works starting from line art and ending with the finished product being scanned and painted through photoshop.
2) This book, along with lots of other how-to-draw books, will not make you Picasso. It's simply an insight into digital art that starts from drawing your idea, scanning it and painting it in Photoshop. (or whichever program you use)

Hellishly Handsome How-To

Just...Oh MY GOD...

This book is gorgeous. Everything about it I absolutely loved and was vey sad when I finished. The only thing I wish this book had were devils. Why? Well, because devils are also fallen angels. I absolutely ADORE that the writers put in the back story of fallen angels in this book. As someone like me, interested in angelology and demononlogy would very much appreciate. The art is beautiful and so very detailed from the fallen angels' facial expressions to their feathers. Speaking of detailed expressions, these are very chilling. So sinister. Especially the handsome man on the cover. He's very seductive and terrifying! What made me get this book was a reviewer who said that the majority of fallen angels was male. At first, I was apprehensive of getting it until I read that review which prompted me to finally just get it. I was afraid that the majority of angels would just be scantily clad women as one who thinks of angels we think of females, right? So is not the case for this book. There are some females in it rendered very beautifully, but the males are more rampant in this book. Glad I bought it. It's awesome and inspiring!

The Best wasn't Good Enough?

Jeanne Avery's book on astrological aspects is one of the very best books I've found that describes in REAL LANGUAGE what an aspect FEELS like.
Avery uses vivid and unforgettable examples from the lives of celebrities and people she knows or has read for. There is something about the way she relates these people describing their OWN feelings that sticks in your mind.
In my beginning days interpreting charts professionally (scarey! back in 85), I often relied on her descriptions of aspects to make my points with clients and invariably the clients were nothing less than astounded with the veracity. For the first time, I could really understand what it felt like to have Mars square Uranus when such a person in her book described it as a sugar high or a sugar addiction, the scratch that could never be itched, etc.
And I remember the Pluto Mars person in her book saying her son infuriated her so much that her husband had to hold her hands to her side to keep her from doing violence to him while she literally SHOOK WITH RAGE.
In my beginning practice, I actually had people break down in tears of gratitude when I used these analogies for them to help them understand the difficult energies they were dealing with -- they were so moved that FINALLY someone seemed to understand what they were going through.
It's a real shame this book didn't get reprinted because you can see that I found it quite invaluable. It takes awhile as a pro to build up enough case experience to have your own set of "snapshots" to use in illustrating aspects and Avery has some really, truly wonderful ones. Good illustrations of energy during a chart interpretation/reading build instant empathy with the client and that builds good rapport for anything important that is going to follow. It's part of the magic of astrology.
I would certainly recommend chasing this book down in the used section if you are considering a career in astrology.

As a huge Bowie fan, and someone who sought factual information on the enigmatic rock legend i really enjoyed this book. There is more to recommend it than the cover (best picture of Bowie ive ever seen), Buckley meets just about anyone who was ever connected with Bowie, drawing upon bandmates like Carlos Alomar and Earl Slick, as well as contributions from producers such as Tony Visconti and Nile Rodgers as well as sound masters such as Eno, to give us a fuller picture of Bowie throughout the last four decades. What i like in particular about this book is the descriptions of Bowie's 'bad times', the 74-76 period in particular is very full and well outlined. If you love Bowie, you'll love reading this. The book also tries to uncover the meaning and history behind individual classic songs such as Heroes, Station To Station and Life On Mars?, which many of the other Bowie books dont do. As a biography of course we must not automatically accept everything in the book as fact, i mean for example, Bowie didnt contribute or endorse the book - but he never supports or endorses biographies of himself anyway, so just a teeny weeny pinch of salt sometimes thoughout might be wise.

David Buckley certainly knows his subject having even written a PhD thesis on Bowie. In spite of that, this book is (in my twisted view at least) sadly not a very academic or high-brow approach to Bowie's art. Instead it is a rather straightforward biography with more emphasis on Bowie as an artist than as a person. I would have liked to see a more in-depth academical analysis of him, but I guess that wouldn't appeal to so many of his fans. Anyway, it is probably the best book on Bowie around so I recommend it. The only thing that really bothers me is the very strange collection of pictures Buckley has picked for the book. He seems to like those where Bowie has (to me at least) this really nasty, unpleasant grin. (Check out the Thin White Duke picture and the one with Bolan for example.) That is a shame I think, when he quite frankly is the most photogenic person alive.

This homage to marriage takes you through the ups and downs of relationships, the struggles to be honest and vulnerable, and does a masterful job of showing both the hardest and most beautiful aspects of married life. Ada's writing, her authenticity, her stories will fill you with amazement. I read the book in one sitting and urge you to do the same.

I feel like the world has been missing this: An honest testimony to what marriage is and what it could be, in its best times and its worst. Wedding Toasts I'll Never Give gives real thought and light to the predicament of marriage. I turned every page nodding emphatically YES YES YES. The book is warm and beautiful and hard to put down. I'm grateful for its existence.
