About the Author
Phoenix artist Julie Gilbert Pollard has taught classes since 1985, and currently teaches at the Scottsdale Artists' School, Shemer Art Center and Cynthia's Art Asylum in the greater Phoenix area, as well as the Highland Valley Studios in California, Dillman's Creative Arts Foundation in Wisconsin and La Romita School of Art in Umbria, Italy. Julie is a signature member of the San Diego Watercolor Society. Her work is included in many private and corporate collections and she is represented in Arizona by Esprit Decor Gallery in Phoenix and Windrush Gallery in Sedona. Julie is the author of Brilliant Color (North Light Books, 2009) and has been featured in The Artist's Magazine (May 2010) and 100 Ways to Paint Landscapes (International Artist, 2004). THOUGHT THIS WAS A WATERCOLOR BOOK, BUT not so...

I recently received "Watercolor Unleashed, New Directions...",but actually this book
should be titled "Working with Mixed Media", as the author used a lot of pages
for acrylic painting instructions, buying acrylic materials, and mixing acrylics
into watercolor painting projects. The reader is left with the thought that a person
without previous painting experience might think that one must lock in dark
shading on a watercolor painting with the use of acrylics, which naturally changes
the painting from a true watercolor to a mixed media project. Surely this is
feasible, but not recommended in most art circles. The use of acrylics in a watercolor
painting is normally thought of as a last resort to save an otherwise nice project,
by correcting a mistake with the use of opaque acrylics. Watered down and used sparingly,
they can help touch up a mistake.
On page 7 of this book, the author talks about sealing the finished painting with
several coats of varnish. Is she referring to a watercolor painting? I have never heard
or imagined doing such a thing to a watercolor painting. In my 10 years
of art classes with various experienced teachers, no one has suggested this process.
For certain, now that I am teaching watercolor classes, I would not introduce the use
of varnishing. Why use watercolor paints at all? Just use acrylics and teach it well.
I have sealed oil paintings, but never watercolor or acrylic. Normally considering myself a
straight thinker who understands data in a book, when the author says it's a must to do several
coats of varnish, I am obviously confused.
I'm trying not to trash this book, knowing a great deal of thought must have gone into
it's preparation and execution. However, I found the content confusing when it starts
discussing Plein Air materials on page 8 followed by color theory, both subjects
discussed before the chapter on page 23 that introduces drawing and composing. I
guess it's in the eyes of the beholder which comes first, the drawing and composing
or the color theory?
Perhaps if as I find my way through the contents, I will grab onto a nugget or two that I can
use, but after some exploration, I did not find anything I thought of as a new direction,
as the title of the book suggests, "Watercolor Unleashed, A new direction for traditional
painting techniques".
Books cost money and we should trust the information given. A couple very good
watercolor books that stay with the media, which I thoroughly recommend are,
"Dance with Light" by Elizabeth Kincaid,and/or "Watercolor Depth and Realism" by Laurie Humble.
Both are easy to follow because they are well organized with materials that will support
watercolor artists, beginners through advanced.

A fine art book but not exactly for just watercolors

I liked the paintings the author presented - loose, live and colorful. However, the approach she demonstrates is not a typical watercolor way as she applies the darkest areas using acrylic first. This would be somehow different from how watercolorists paint from light to dark.

Wonderful Book

I like the detailed and creative processes in this book. I am a
Water colorist and have recently been branching out into experimental work, including Mixed Media...this book will help me add more 'flavor' to my work and I highly recommend it to beginners through intermediate artists.
